    Take Heart!

    June 5th, 2009 | Micah Mathis

    I was reading in my devotional this morning and came across this section:

    The faith of many people begins to falter when apprehensions enter their thinking, and they forget the meaning of God’s assurance— they forget to take a deep spiritual breath. The only way to remove the fear from our lives is to listen to God’s assurance to us.

    That seems to be the issue with faith doesn’t it. It is strongest when things are easy, but often falls short when things get tough and you need it the most. In our flesh we are weak and therefore lose faith when we forget the truth of God’s word to us.

    It is much like a child and mother, no matter what has happened or what is around the next corner if Mom says it is going to be OK then the child is calmed and believes. I think this is because we truly want to believe. Deep down inside our souls are searching for someone to make it all right. To usher in the perfect peace and assurance we so desperately need. Deep down we know that we in and of ourselves are incapable of bringing such assurance to our own lives, and therefore we are constantly searching for the one who can.

    Still because of our present reality we often forget or deny the exact assurance we seek. We refuse to believe that it exists in light of our current circumstances. We get so focused on the world and things around us that we forget that the assurance we are offered transcends this world. That our hope, peace, and direction come from a source far greater and more powerful than anything in this life.

    This life altering and soul freeing truth is proclaimed to us in scripture:

    Hebrews 3:5-6

    Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
    “Never will I leave you;
    never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence,
    “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
    What can man do to me?”

    So whether you are standing at a crossroads in your life, at the bottom of the pit, or simply searching for new direction. Take heart! (John 16:33) Your Lord is present and will be faithful to direct and provide.
